AND SO:
I did the thing and have this nifty review! I wanted to talk about more things, but I felt that 10 minutes was already pushing it (it was 15+ prior to editing....).
To summarize (Things that I may or may not have added in the video):
(Let's save the best for last!)
Negative(s):
- Some of the panels I went to could've gone longer. Personal opinion. :P
Some of the panelists seemed as if they were a bit unorganized. It was probably first-time jitters or something. Either way, allocating time accordingly to allow for more panels?
- My biggest concern was the arcade room. Granted, 1PG (1 Player Gaming, I believe that's what they go by) was there and in terms of consoles, were pretty neat and chill about it. However, last year's Dokidokon had the "Hatsune Miku Project DIVA" game and that actually felt pretty "arcade-esque". This year, they had stuck solely onto console gaming, which I felt they could've spiced things up a bit more. If possible, maybe Dokidokon can not only have the free competitions and console gaming that 1PG does, but also include another group that does VR or even imported Japanese arcade games? That way, it would include those who want to do chill competitions and consoles but also allow those to want to be super competitive (at least for those who like doing con-tournaments). Long story short: Adding a bit more variety next year.
I understand that 2017 was the first year for it all, but since Dokidokon is on the radar as a legitimate convention, it is possible to add even MORE things!!! ^_^
Positives (Plural):
- I always enjoy the sense of community at conventions, especially with the "Team" colors! There is even an incentive for participating in the team function panels (Hungry Hungry Hippos, but with cosplayers and elementary school scooters). It gives this sense of "heart", so to speak. :D
- Everyone (AND THE STAFF) were pretty sociable and helpful! Random quips between other con-goers, having conversations with the special guests (or maybe just receiving a greeting in return in most cases), and even the security were great! Dokidokon always does well in their guest selection and definitely knows how to treat them! ^_^
- Foam fighting, karaoke, and unlike last year (as far as I can remember), a MEET AND GREET WITH THE GUESTS!!!! :D
Though I am sad I wasn't able to go in, but think about how awesome it would be to sit down and have a drink (alcoholic or not) with a celebrity! I can only assume that those who were in there were straight-up stoked!
- THE DEALER'S ROOM!! Now that it was bigger and spacious, it was a bit easier to find things. I also didn't feel like I was going to die of suffocation.... lol
The set-up was great; they had an autographs area, the artists were generally in the middle, and the shops/dealers were lined around the room against the walls. Oh, and everybody was just a joy to have conversations with! ^_^
- The fact that they ended up rolling with the "Boku no Hero Academia" theme was great. Seriously, when you invite the voices of Bakugo (Clifford Chapin), Izuku/Deku (Justin Briner), Todoroki (David Matranga), and Best (Micah Solusod), it kinda just ends up being that way. Oh, and they were some chill peeps.
- Also, I really REALLY enjoyed the "Joe Goffeney Voice Over Panel"! Long story short, who DOESN'T want to turn into a Super Saiyan?
In any event, Dokidokon was amazing! Of course, conventions will always have something that doesn't work well, but hey, a good convention comes back better than the year before! ^_^
That's it for my Dokidokon 2018 things! Thanks for the read. Oh, and if you didn't read, the video is below. Trust me, sometimes reading can be a definite chore.... xD
If you have not yet attended Dokidokon, 2019 is going to be amazing, so make plans for July 12th - 14th, 2019!
Look forward to more for me in the coming future! :D
